Mexican police commander was active in cartel

News for Dallas, Texas

A former Mexican police commander played an active role in guiding drug shipments as second in command of the Gulf cartel, a witness testified Thursday in his federal drug smuggling case.

Carlos Landin-Martinez also was heavily involved in enforcing cartel dominance, said Daniel Zamarano, a Chilean restaurant manager who once smuggled marijuana and methamphetamine for the cartel.

But like all of the government’s witnesses in four days of testimony, Zamarano could not say he ever witnessed Landin commit a crime, The (McAllen) Monitor reported.
